We are excited to announce Lamaro Smith, Maz Joachin, and Staniel Russel as our first panelists of GOM CON at Breezes Resort Nassau Bahamas! Join them as they discuss the ins and outs of the comic and manga industry.
I am a visual artist from The Bahamas. For the past decade I’ve worked as an illustrator, designer and animator. I've excelled in crafting artwork for books, board games, advertisements, and animated content for product ads and short films. I’ve collaborated with marketers, writers, and various companies. With my wealth of experience, I bring a unique perspective to projects.
"No art form should be off limits to Bahamians”
-Maz Joachin, storyboard artist and cartoonist
My entire art career has been in pursuit of these words. Born of Haitian descent, I’ve fought to understand what makes a true Bahamian artist. In a way, I think I’ve stumbled across the only answer I can live with. I believe that we must push pass every monolithic idea of what Caribbean art can be. For me, the way I choose to do that has and will always be storytelling, whether that be through comic books or animation.
Focusing on themes of heritage, conservation, and friendship, Nassau Rock aims to entertain and inform.
Animation can be seen as lowbrow or juvenile but it has matured over the last 50 or so years. With its reach being endless it’s become the perfect tool for connecting cultures and ideas.
I founded streetlight animation studios with the goal of showing my fellow Bahamian artists that there are no limits to our potential. Also, I think that art can stand to be a little fun sometimes.
From school book sketches to being published digitally in the pages of the diverse manga brand SaturdayAM’s sister magazine Saturday Brunch. Staniel Russell started seriously getting into Asian art culture as Co-Owner of the Anime Hobby Store The CAGE. Delving deeper into it with a natural talent for art, he had drawn and launched his first comic "Titan Sphere" in the line-up of Snafu Comics, along side "PPGD" (powerpuff girls doujinshi), "GrimTales" and "Everafter". He went on to publishing his next work, "Kayos Gaiden" in the co-owned magazine YeaBey with Nadia Russell, Maz Joachin and Rashad Cash. The locally successful magazine ran for 10 issues before being put into hiatus.
He is now focused on building himself in the Global market to put The Bahamas on the world stage alongside other international artist with his currently digital serialized series "Zephyr" - a manga about a female college student on a work assignment from L.E.A.F to assess the damage in Andros due to HURRICAN DORIAN who then accidentally obtained supernatural powers from a celestial being to free it from it’s blue hole prison.
